Support for carers

This page is for carers who are looking for information or support to assist them directly with their caring role.

    If you need emergency respite, phone the Carer Gateway service provider in your region on 1800 422 737.

     

  • Carer Gateway provides a range of face to face, online and phone based supports to family and friend carers across Australia. Services include carer support planning, counselling, peer support, coaching, carer directed support packages and respite.

    Carers can phone 1800 422 737 to access phone counselling or to speak to the Carer Gateway service provider in their region about accessing emotional, practical or financial support.

  • Disability Gateway - 1800 643 787 (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm). Connecting people with disability, their families and carers to information and services.

    National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) - 1800 800 110 (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm). Funded support for people with significant and permanent disability.

    Disability Advocacy Finder - Information about advocacy services to support people with disability, their families and carers.

    Ageing and Disability Abuse Helpline - 1800 628 221 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). Information and support if you are concerned that a person with disability is being abused, neglected or exploited.

  • My Aged Care - 1800 200 422 (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm, Saturdays 10.00am to 2.00pm). Access to a range of supports and services for older Australians.

    Older Australians COVID-19 Support Line - 1800 171 866 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.00pm). COVID-19 related information and referrals for older people and those who support them.

    Seniors Rights Service - 1800 424 079 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.30pm). Information, support and advocacy for older people, their family members and carers.

    Ageing and Disability Abuse Helpline - 1800 628 221 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). Information and support if you are concerned that an older person is being abused, neglected or exploited.

  • NSW Health carer support services and information - Contact information for carer support teams in each Local Health District and information and resources for carers accessing public health services.

    HealthDirect - 1800 022 222 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Free, trustworthy health advice and service listings.

    National Dementia Helpline - 1800 100 500 (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm). Information and assistance to people living with dementia, their families and carers.

    CarerHelp - information for carers of people approaching the end of life.

    NSW Palliative Care Directory of Services - contact phone numbers for local palliative care services across NSW.

    Palliative Care After Hours Helpline - 1800 548 225 (5.00pm to 9.00am weekdays, and 24 hours on weekends and public holidays). Professional information, support and advice for palliative care patients and their carers.

    Advance Care Planning Australia - 1300 208 582 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). Information and resources to support people and their carers to make the best choices about their future health and care.

  • NSW Mental Health Line - 1800 011 511 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Speak to a professional about concerns for someone you care about.

    Suicide Call Back Service - 1300 659 467 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Professional counselling for people affected by suicide.

    NSW Family and Carer Mental Health Programs - Education, information and advocacy for families and carers of people with mental health conditions and the people they support.

    Mental Health Carers NSW ‘Carer Connection’ Helpline - 1300 554 660 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.30pm). Information, referrals and support for mental health carers in NSW.

    National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) - 1800 800 110 (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm). Access to life-long supports and services for eligible people with psycho-social disability.

    Alcohol and Drug Information Service - 1800 250 015 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Information, support and referrals for those affected by alcohol and other drug use.

  • Aboriginal Medical Services - across NSW. Health and wellbeing support.

    Aboriginal Legal Service - 02 9213 4100 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). Legal support and advice.

  • Translating and Interpreting Service - 131 450 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Immediate phone interpreting and information in multiple languages.

    NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service - 02 9332 9710 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). Health information for people from CALD backgrounds.

    Transcultural Mental Health Centre - 02 9912 3850 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm). Works with communities to support positive mental health for people from CALD communities.

    Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association of NSW - 1800 629 072 (Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm). Advice and advocacy for people with disability, their families and carers from CALD backgrounds.

  • Siblings Australia – information and support specifically for adult sibling carers

    Carers NSW Young Carer Program – 02 9280 4744 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). A free, state-wide service for young carers, 25 years or under.

  • QLife - 1800 184 527 or webchat (7 days, 3.00pm to 12.00am). Anonymous and free LGBTI peer support and referral.

    LGBTIQ+ Health Australia - 02 7209 6301 (Monday to Friday). Programs to help LGBTIQ+ people manage their health and access inclusive health services.

    ACON - 02 9206 2000 (Monday to Friday). Information, counselling and support.

    Twenty10 - 02 8594 9555 (Monday to Friday, 1.00pm to 3.00pm). Specialist support for young people aged 12-25 years.

  • Centrelink offers a range of concession and health care cards depending on the payment or pension you receive.

    Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) and Gold Card holders are eligible for a range of concessions including health, transport, household and vehicle services

    The NSW Seniors Card is available to people over 60 who work less than 20 hours per week on average per annum (there is no asset or income test)

    The Companion Card is issued to people who have a significant, lifelong disability and will require attendant care for the rest of their life. The Companion Card allows a person’s carer free entry into participating venues and events.

    Service NSW lists more than 70 concessions and rebates that carers may be eligible for, including energy rebates, hospital parking concessions, subsidised hospital accommodation and taxi subsidies.

  • Enable NSW - 1800 362 253 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). Funding for aids and equipment not funded through the NDIS or My Aged Care.

    Assistive Technology Australia - 1300 885 886 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm). Information and advice about a wide range of aids or equipment that may be available to support the person that you care for.

    Hearing Australia - 134 432 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm). Hearing services for children and young people up to the age of 26 and eligible adults including Pensioner Concession Card holders and Aboriginal people aged over 50.

    National Continence Helpline - 1800 330 066 (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm). The Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS) provides a payment to assist eligible people who have permanent and severe incontinence to meet some of the costs of their incontinence products.

    Carers SA - 1800 422 737  (Carer Gateway) (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm). Provides support to unpaid family Carers across South Australia.

    Carers TAS - 03 6144 3700 (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm). Provides support to family and friend carers across Tasmania.

    Carers WA - 1300 227 377 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm). The peak body that represents the needs and interests of carers in Western Australia.

    Carers VIC - 1800 514 845 (Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm). The statewide voice for family carers, representing and providing support to carers in Victoria.

    Carers NT - 1800 422 737  (Carer Gateway) (Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm). Community based organisation dedicated to improving the lives of family carers living in the Northern Territory.

The Carer Knowledge Exchange is led by Carers NSW and proudly funded by the NSW Government.
