Long Summary

This paper analyses how Australian consumer attitudes towards Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have changed overtime. Findings indicate that although awareness and understating of BPD has improved, many people living with BPD still experience stigma and difficulty accessing healthcare services and financial support.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Awareness and understanding of BPD is improving
  • However, many people living with BPD are still suffering from stigma and having difficulty accessing services

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Many people diagnosed with BPD continue to experience stigma, barriers to treatment and difficulty accessing appropriate services
  • The NHMRC BPD Guidelines released in 2013 have not yet seen practical widespread implementation, but there is evidence to suggest that consumers and healthcare workers now have a better understanding of of BPD
